The wonder is not that Lewis became such an accomplished and highly regarded Christian writer; the wonder is that he became a Christian at all. The man who has been singled out for praise by Pope John Paul II as a masterful defender of the faith did not return to his own childhood faith until he was in his thirties. In his memoir, Surprised by Joy, Lewis describes himself on the day he got down on his knees and prayed as “the most dejected and reluctant convert in all England.”
