There was a Samaritan, Simon, a native of the village called Gitto, who in the reign of Claudius Caesar did mighty acts of magic, by virtue of the art of the devils operating in him. He was considered a god, and was honored with a statue on the river Tiber, which bore this inscription: To Simon, the holy god.
